About Melissa Bluey

“when you pair the right visual with the right message—it‘s like magic.”

I wanted to be a designer from a young age, before I even knew I could turn my love for art into a career. Whenever I had a free moment, I was drawing, painting and creating something.

I attended Ithaca College and solidified my career trajectory serving as the design editor for the student newspaper, The Ithacan. I fell in love with publication design and the magic of paring the right visual with the right message—and getting it to the right audience.

I've made my career as a publication designer and art director for the last 15+ years, where I've had the privilege and honor to work for a number of brands, including The Atlantic and The Heritage Foundation. I currently lead an in-house design team at a public policy think tank where we produce creative design solutions for the organization.

I've approached each position I've ever had as an opportunity to learn something new—how to commission art/photography, how to style photos, how to build a visual identity for a brand, how to manage a team, how to work with print vendors. And most importantly, to always keep the audience at the center of design decisions I make.
